Like your family, our family enjoys watching family-friendly shows and movies. But we don’t watch just any TV channel or online streaming platform. And if you’re not a fan of the mouse, these Disney Plus alternatives can provide better quality content that aligns with your family vision.
My favorite alternatives are not Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. We haven’t subscribed to any of these services since 2015. If you’re weird like me, I think you’re going to like these suggestions.
If you still pay monthly for cable or satellite, “cutting the cord” is an easy way to save money.
Best Family Streaming Services for 2020
Here are my favorite streaming services for families. Each one offers a different content library. You may decide to try one or a combination of them. Whatever you decide, they can complement or replace Disney Plus, Netflix, Nick Jr., and other family subscriptions.
Pure Flix is my #1 recommendation as a Disney Plus alternative. In fact, we switched to Pure Flix from Netflix. You can stream from your smart TV, phone, tablet, or computer.
The Pure Flix content library is amazing and contains some of the following genres:
- Full-length movies (Christian and family-friendly)
- Exclusive Pure Flix-only movies and TV shows
- Classic TV shows
- “Kids Only” ages 1-10
- Homeschool resources
You will find a little something for everyone. There are plenty of David A.R. White films (he’s a Pure Flix co-founder) but lots of shows and movies from yesteryear. Examples include westerns featuring Gene Autry or John Wayne. Plus, you can watch classic comedies such as Abbott and Costello.

You get a one week free trial. After that, you can pay by the month, year, or purchase lifetime access.
- Monthly plan: $12.99 per month
- Annual plan: $99.99 per year ($8.44 per month)
- Lifetime plan: $1,000 one-time donation ($850 is tax-deductible)
VidAngel filters questionable content including language, violence, and nudity from movies and shows. You get to choose the filters.
There are plenty of movies my wife and me enjoyed as children that we want to share with ours. Now that we’re parents and have watched some of these movies from a different perspective, we ask one question often…
What were our parents thinking?!
You can filter content from your existing streaming services including Amazon and Netflix. VidAngel also provides original content. Although to “get your money’s worth,” you will need to connect it to one of the compatible streaming plans.
VidAngel costs $9.99 per month after a 30-day free trial.
You can’t stream sports channels or local channels (that’s one way Philo only costs $20 a month vs $40+ like its competitors). However, you can stream 58 cable channels including:
- Animal Planet
- Food Network
- Hallmark Channel
It’s possible to watch Philo on up to 3 devices at once. You also get unlimited cloud DVR with 30 days storage giving you an entire month to watch recorded content at your convenience.
You get a 7-day free trial (similar to Pure Flix) then you pay $20 monthly.
You may also consider these online platforms. Although they are not a true Disney Plus alternative.
Qustodio is one of the best parental control software. You can use it to block bad websites on your child’s various internet devices. More importantly, you can set screen time limits so they don’t spend all day looking at a computer screen.
You can perform some of these features with Qustodio:
- Block games and apps
- Limit screen time
- YouTube monitoring
- Facebook monitoring
- Call tracking and monitoring for Android
- Family locator
- Panic button (for Android)
You can purchase an annual subscription for multiple devices:
- 5 devices: $54.95 per year
- 10 devices: $96.95 per year
- 15 devices: $137.95 per year
Another awesome Christian resource for adult and children’s content is Formed. You can watch a plethora of adult, teen, and child-themed videos, talks, and documentaries. And all of it is from a Catholic perspective.
One children’s show you should consider watching first is Brother Francis.
Formed is offered for free through many Roman Catholic parishes. Simply find your home parish to join.
If not, you can also pay for a monthly or annual subscription after a 7-day free trial:
- Monthly: $9.99 per month
- Annual: $100 per year
Streaming platforms are an easy way to save money and still afford entertainment on a small income. But you should also make sure the content you watch matches your family values. These resources make that task easier and it’s why I think they’re the best Disney Plus alternatives.
Do you use any of these Disney Plus alternatives? If so, what do you like or dislike?
